Trivandrum is famous for many tourist attractions,Trivandrum, now called Thiruvananthapuram, is the capital of Kerala and located at the south-western tip of India. It is bound by the Arabian Sea on the west and the state of Tamil Nadu on the east. The wooded highlands in the eastern and north-eastern borders give it some enchanting picnic spots and a long and beautiful shoreline. Internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought-after tourist destination.

SRI PADMANABHASWAMY TEMPLE – A blend of Kerala and Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is noted for its mural paintings and stone carvings. One among the 108 sacred Vishnu temples in India, the presiding deity here is Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha, the Serpent. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple in prescribed dress code. Spread over an area of 2,400 sq. metres, the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple is believed to be over 260 years old. The temple with its gopuram (tower) towering majestically is believed to be among the 108 shrines sacred to the Vaishnav in India.

PUTHENMALIKA (Kuthiramalika) PALACE – Situated close to the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, this palace was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma, the King of Travancore who was a renowned poet, musician, social reformer and statesman. The palace museum displays paintings and priceless collections of the royal family. The palace gets its name from the 122 horses that are carved into the wooden wall brackets that support the southern roof. The official name of the palace is Puthen Malika (New Mansion). The palace forms part of a vast complex of royal buildings in the vicinity of Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The building was left unoccupied for more than a century, following the demise of Swathi Thirunal in 1846.

SHANGUMUGHAM BEACH – Shanghumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram is one of the main beaches in Kerala, situated just 8 km from Trivandrum city. Shankumugham Beach or Shangumukham Beach is situated close to Veli Tourist Village and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The beach is noted for its serene atmosphere, the vast stretch of white sand and its ideal location miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The beach provides an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the beauty of sunset.

MATSYA KANYAKA SCULPTURE – A huge, 35 m long sculpture of a mermaid, known as Matsya Kanyaka or Jalakanyaka is one of the major attractions of Shanghumugham Beach. Other tourist attractions include an indoor recreation club and the Star Fish Restaurant – a restaurant designed in the shape of a Starfish. Situated near the beach is the Chacha Nehru Traffic Training Park – where children can have a first-hand knowledge about traffic rules.

VELI TOURIST VILLAGE – Trivandrum’s most popular picnic destination, Veli Tourist Village is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the city centre, very close to the Trivandrum airport. The picturesque Veli Lagoon is separated by a narrow sandbar from the Arabian Sea; this sandbar is the Veli Tourist Village complete with a waterfront park, floating bridge and great water sports facility. Particularly popular with children, the place gets extremely crowded on weekends. A major draw to Veli is the large inland lake separated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar. Set out on a sunset cruise into the Veli Lagoon and watch the water change color from bluish-green to burnt orange. Enjoy the tranquil beauty of the lagoon and the Arabian Sea beyond on a pedal boat or row boat. Power boats, kayaks and hovercraft are other options for water sports lovers. Scenes from the daily life of the local fishermen flash past as you drift on the lagoon. You will see them ready their boats, work on their nets or poll sand-laden barges.

Museum, Zoo & Art Gallery – The 19th century Napier Museum built in the Indo-Sarcenic style houses are rare collection of archaeological and historic artifacts. Located near to the Museum is the Sree Chithra Art Gallery which displays original paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Svetlova and Nicholas Roerich. One of the first zoos in India, the Zoological Park was established here as early as 1859. (Monday holiday)
